The name Stave Church already reveals a lot about the interior of the imposing churches, of which only about 30 well preserved in Norway are to be visited. The interior is crossed by a variety of wooden pillars, the so-called bars, on which rests the sometimes very elaborate roof construction. Striking is the emerging architecture of the stave churches, you could say they are all built up in the sky. The type of construction and how the wooden elements are put together and decorated reveals that these were the same hands that built both these churches and the legendary Viking ships.

One of the most impressive, and probably oldest, specimens is Vestlandet Stave Church, rightly named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church of Lom, in the province of Oppland, is one of the largest surviving historic stave churches and was built in the 12th century.
