From enmity to friendship!

History Center Dybbøl Banke, Sønderborg

The Düppeler Schanzen is undoubtedly Denmark’s most famous battlefield. The year 1864 marks a milestone in Danish-German history. It was the year of the second Schleswig feud, which was also a very important chapter in our shared history.

Many years have passed since the conflict in 1864 and today the beautiful Düppeler Mühle stands on the battlefield to commemorate the victims of both countries, as a sign of today’s excellent cross-border relations and the unprecedented coexistence of both peoples.
The Dybbøl Banke History Center takes your groups back to that fateful year in an exciting way. With narration, re-enactments and film footage, the history of yesteryear is brought to life so that guests can understand what happened back then. One marvels at a store of partly original clothing from this period. A ski jump with several buildings has been recreated on the outside area, which of course you can walk on and which lets you immerse yourself directly in the action. Cannons thunder, uniforms scratch and the smell of gunpowder irritates the nose. You can be actively involved if you like and z. B. lying in the straw in the barracks or trying on the fine uniforms of the soldiers, you already think you are in 1864…
Another highlight is certainly a visit to the historic mill on the site. Spend hours of fun and excitement with your groups at Dybbøl Banke History Centre.

A walk-in art sculpture with a fantastic view

In the immediate vicinity of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, in the middle of the marsh, brimming with unique natural and cultural experiences, there proudly stands one of the highlights of the South Jutland region – the “Marsk Tower” observation tower. This particular attraction isn’t actually a tower, but rather a walk-in art sculpture with fantastic views. The sculpture winds its way up 25 meters like a strand of DNA and gives your groups an intensive experience of nature. This unique architectural masterpiece represents the DNA of man and at the same time that of nature here in the Wadden Sea. The tower is built in such a clever way that nobody meets you during the ascent and descent, as there is a different way up than down. Arrived at the top after 146 steps, you feel at one with the surroundings and nature, which fascinates you. In good weather you can see 36 meters above sea level as far as Sylt. On the way down you need “only” 131 steps. Marsk Tower is also barrier-free, as there is an invisible elevator in the middle of the sculpture, which can also be used. Royal and culinary greetings!

Schackenborg Slot, Møgeltønder

The Castle Restaurant: Møgeltønder is located in the immediate vicinity of the World Heritage Site “Wadden Sea” and its endless view of this fantastic nature. The location is very idyllic, here ducks wade in pure idyll over the historically cobbled Schlossstrasse in the center with its old trees, in which the light from old traditional lanterns breaks in the evening and shows the way. In the middle of this seemingly frozen time lies the Kro of Schackenborg Castle, anno 1687, in the immediate vicinity of the castle itself.

The fact that history is very important here is immediately apparent when you enter the very cozy and historic Kro. It has been restored more extensively than ever before and now shines again in new splendor, so that a stay is truly an experience in a royal ambience. The kitchen takes your groups on a gastronomic journey through modern variations of southern Jutland dining culture with seasonal, regional dishes made from fresh local ingredients. was, among other things, a bastion of the Danish crown as well as the church, which at the time was fighting against the Counts of Holstein. A total of 11 generations of the Graf Schack family lived in the castle until it became the property of the royal family in 1978. In the meantime
the castle passed into a foundation. Many unique stories about the royals and other exciting events accompany your groups during the tour of the palace and gardens. In the former riding stables, a café invites you to linger over a delicious cup of coffee and pastries.

Denmark and the German-Danish borderland!

Sønderborg Castle has stood at the entrance to Alssund for around 800 years. Many significant events in the history of Denmark and the borderland have taken place here. The focus of the exhibitions in the castle is on the Danish history of the last 200 years from the perspective of North Schleswig. In the exhibition “North Schleswig 1920 to today” you can follow the development up to the present day.

But also princely chambers from the 16th century. there is to discover, e.g. B. the large Knights’ Hall or Queen Dorothea’s Chapel, which is Scandinavia’s oldest surviving Renaissance room. You can also learn more about the fate of the Danish King Christian II, who had to spend 17 years as a prisoner in the castle. A special exhibition about the First World War is new. Since North Schleswig was part of Germany during this time, numerous men from the region took part in this war as German soldiers.

You can also book three different guided tours at Sonderburg Castle: on the history of the castle, on the German-Danish War of 1864 or on the period from 1920 to the present day. The castle café invites groups to enjoy coffee and cake as well as light meals, in which case please remember to make a reservation in advance.
